StreetVet Gloucester

Launched in March 2019, volunteer vets, vet nurses and support volunteers all work together to bring StreetVet’s vital work to Gloucester and the surrounding areas. The team provides free accessible veterinary care to the pets of those experiencing homelessness.

The StreetVet Gloucester team, supported by StreetVet's Clinical and Volunteer teams delivers at least two outreach clinics a month in the local community.

When we started StreetVet in Gloucester, we had to connect with other homeless charities, and roam the streets, as such a high proportion of our patients were sleeping rough with their humans.

With our advocacy and support of local hostels and increasing the awareness and understanding of the human-animal bond, we now don't need to roam the streets so much, as the majority of our patients are now allowed into hostels and temporary accommodations WITH their humans.

Volunteers at each outreach location work collaboratively, sharing leadership, tasks, and responsibilities across administration and service delivery to ensure the outreach runs smoothly.

StreetVet Gloucester

Each StreetVet outreach team delivers free accessible veterinary care directly into the community. Outreach clinics are held on the streets, in hostels or other homelessness support facilities. Our teams of volunteers take the practice to the pavement, meeting people and pets where they are.

Anything that can be done in a consulting room, our volunteer vets and vet nurses can do at an outreach clinic, helping remove barriers to care while building trust and continuity.

At each outreach clinic, teams may provide:

  • Full health checks and clinical assessments

  • Vaccinations and microchipping

  • Preventative treatments, including flea, worm and parasite control

  • Diagnosis and treatment of illness or injury

  • Dispensing medications and providing follow‑up care

  • Blood sampling, urine testing and basic diagnostic procedures

  • Sampling and monitoring of lumps or wounds

  • Advice, guidance and education to support responsible pet care and ownership

  • Provision of daily pet essentials, including food, coats, collars, leads and toys

  • This outreach based approach ensures pets receive the care they need, in a trusted environment, supporting the wellbeing of both animals and their owners

StreetVet Gloucester in action

The StreetVet Gloucester team have consistently provided the vital outreach service to their patients in the local area since 2019. The team seees their patients in two different locations due to the proximity to town centre streets, having more space and privacy in one, whilst being opposite several hostels in the other location. This makes it easier for the team to effectively see as many patients as possible from the local area. The team often support with delivering talks on local radio and at local colleges to help raise awareness of StreetVet's vital work.
